  1. Automotive industry charity, Ben, is turning up the heat for this year’s Industry Leader Challenge (ILC) which will see a group of senior leaders tackling the Sahara Desert in November.

Up to 10 teams of two will spend five days trekking across the Sahara Desert in Morocco to raise a minimum of £20,000 per team for Ben. Participants will spend up to 10 hours a day trekking across unforgiving terrain, covering up to 27km a day in the punishing heat. Daytime temperatures will be 25-35°C and closer to zero at night with no shade except during meal stops and overnight.

Previous ILC adventures have included swimming across the English Channel, skydiving, cycling down the Thames and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This year's event is just as epic, presenting a different set of challenges to overcome – heat, sand and the harsh conditions of the world's largest desert. Participants will find themselves camping under canvas, with only a small team, a jeep and a camel for company.

So far, teams from the Retail Motor Industry Federation, the Independent Garage Association and LKQ ECP have signed up to take on the Sahara. From those organisations, Stuart James, Director of RMIF; Rob Collison, Chairman of the IGA and Kevin Finn, Chair of RMIF and IMI, are confirmed as taking part.

Matt Wigginton, Director of Partnerships, Engagement & Income, said: "If you're serious about doing something incredible while making a real difference to people's lives, this year’s Industry Leader Challenge is the perfect opportunity. As with all ILC events, the primary focus is on raising funds to support people in the automotive industry who are facing challenges beyond their control.

“We encourage anyone up for the challenge to reach out and join us in this once-in-a-lifetime experience while raising money to support those in the industry who are struggling or in crisis. Now more than ever, automotive people need Ben – and we need you and your support.”

Participants must have a good level of fitness to endure five consecutive days of trekking the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert in scorching temperatures. There are limited spaces available so, for more information about the event, or to register your interest, please contact Matt Wigginton at [email protected].

The ILC is an epic personal challenge taken on each year by an automotive industry leader (or leaders) to fundraise for Ben. The ILC requires extraordinary personal endeavour that tests the challenger(s) either mentally or physically - or both. After completing a challenge of their choice (either with a team or alone), the challenger then hands the baton over to another industry leader for the following year.

When any member of our automotive family is struggling or in crisis, we all rally to support them.

  2. 220 podium finishes, 73 of which are wins. This is Gresini Racing’s tally in the 1000 races completed so far: today’s podium is one that will be hard to forget.

An incredible comeback with remarkable consistency and with no hesitation, which catapulted Marc Marquez on second place in the Sunday race at Le Mans as well as in third position in the championship standings, 40 points away from leader Jorge Martin.

France brought plenty of smiles in Gresini’s garage, with a solid top-ten finish also for Alex Marquez, who did a great job in scoring points and finding fresh confidence ahead of his home race in Barcelona.

    2nd - MARC MARQUEZ #93
“It was an excellent start, even though it wasn’t as good as yesterday’s. There was more time today to put together a comeback and our pace was strong. I lost a bit of time with Diggia and even before that with Viñales, who is definitely not an easy one to pass. Then, when I bridged the gap to Martin and Bagnaia I was expecting the latter to attack but in the end he didn’t, so I gave it a try. I had something more in the last lap so I took a gamble, and it worked.”

    10th - ALEX MARQUEZ #73

“My pace was good and considering my starting position, we saved our Sunday. We can’t be satisfied, but we now look ahead to Barcelona with a clear picture of what we need to work on, in order to avoid repeating the same mistakes we made at the start of this weekend. The goals are different obviously, but we take all the positives we can from this weekend.”

  3. The British Motor Museum is delighted to have been awarded funding for a new Changing Places toilet, a partnership between the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities (DLUHC) and Muscular Dystrophy UK in association with Stratford on Avon District Council.

Changing Places toilets are designed for people who are unable to use standard accessible toilets and include equipment such as hoists, privacy screens, adult-sized changing benches and space for carers. The installation of this facility will further enhance the Museum's accessibility, helping to open up the extensive vehicle collections to those who may not previously have been able to visit.

Emma Rawlinson, Family & Lifelong Learning Officer at the British Motor Museum, said, “This fantastic facility really does make the British Motor Museum a place for everyone. The Changing Places Toilet will ensure our site is more accessible and inclusive for visitors and groups with complex needs, who can now visit us without worrying about access challenges”.

The opening of the Changing Places toilet came ahead of the Museum's second dedicated Access Day on Wednesday 3 April. This event showcased the range of accessible activities and initiatives on offer at the Museum. Touch and Access Tours, Quiet Hours and Object Handling workshops. A number of the families who visited, commented on how delighted they were with the new facility, and that it made a real difference to their visit. The Museum is extremely grateful to all the donor organisations who made this project a reality.

  5. Saturday 18th May
    9am – 5pm

Ace Cafe London celebrates electric motive power from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 18th May 2023, hosting the cafes annual Electric Vehicle Owners Meet.

Dating from 1827 when Hungarian priest Ányos Jedlik built the first viable electric motor,  the folowing year he used it to power a small car and, at the Stanley Cycle Show in 1896 in London, England, bicycle manufacturer Humber exhibited an electric tandem bicycle.

In 1897, electric cars first found commercial use as taxis in Britain and in the United States. In London, Walter Bersey's electric cabs were the first self-propelled vehicles for hire at a time when cabs were horse-drawn.

The electric vehicle fleet peaked at approximately 30,000 vehicles at the turn of the 20th century  including the iconic British milk float.  For most of the 20th century, the UK was the world's largest user of electric road vehicles.
